Stella Farm - c1820 Farmhouse with Swimming Pond

In the hamlet of Upper Red Hook, Stella Farm is built on one of the county's oldest farms, founded by the Dutch in the late 1700s. An eyebrow colonial, this historic house was built in the 1820s alongside the Meadowbrook Stream that feeds into a large natural swimming pond in the backyard. The property is nearly 5 acres and has been landscaped with majestic trees, flowering gardens and stone walls. The private and lush grounds are unique with the sounds of the stream and dramatic sunset views over the Catskills.

The interior of Stella Farm was designed by Ray Booth of McAlpine, Booth & Ferrier Interiors. The design of the center-hall Dutch Colonial celebrates the original architectural details, while infusing a fresh and modern minimalism.

Stella Farm has great flow, which makes it ideal for entertaining and vacationing in all seasons. Winters are spent by the three fireplaces – in the kitchen, dining room and living room. The house is ideal for both cozy fireside meals in the kitchen with friends or hosting the whole family by the hearth for Thanksgiving. Summers are all about enjoying the private grounds, the birds and the pond. Among the newer additions to the house include a large screened in porch off the kitchen and a deck overlooking the pond. The dock, row boat and swimming tubes invite much fun in the summer months.

The second story has technically 5 bedrooms, for which two of the smaller bedrooms have been converted to an office and a walk-in closet. The master bedroom is large with wide-plank Kings wood flooring. The current office off the master can be converted into a large master bath overlooking the pond. Two lovely guest rooms are off the upstairs hallway along with a full bath and the master bedroom and a wal- in linen closet. The office and walk-in closet/smaller bedrooms can also be accessed by a back staircase.

The entire house has been lovingly restored to preserve as much of the historic detail as possible. While the house has been updated and expanded, there are various original details including, wide plank King's wood floors, beamed ceilings, vintage glass panes and original interior moldings around doors and windows. With weekenders owning the home for more than three decades, there have also been a number of modern upgrades made to the house.

Stella Farm is ideally situated – near Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Tivoli and Bard College's Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Twenty minutes from the the Amtrak station and nearby to both the Catskills and Berkshires for skiing and cultural events. And very nearby are both Greig and Meade Farms for seasonal fruit and vegetables at along wtih Gigi's market.

The house is a very special one, which has brought the owners much joy. It is filled with rich history. The story goes that George Washington and his men spent a night in Upper Red Hook during the Revolutionary War time. The local legend is that when Washington was asked where his troops were spending the night, he answered Under the Starbarracks - and so Starbarrack Road was named.

Offered at $650,000.
